Spring Anime 2012 Preview

It’s been awhile since I actually wrote anything anime-related since the spring anime are just around the corner, I thought it might be good to do a quick preview. I only wrote write-ups for the shows I will be watching. I placed links below so you can refer to other blogging sites for the rest of the shows.

Accel World

    • Genre: Action, Romance, School, Sci-Fi
    • Producer: Sunrise
    • TV Station: Tokyo MX
    • Director: Obara Masakazu
    • Writer: Yoshino Hiroyuki
    • Will start in April 6 2012
    • Number of episode: 24
Synopsis: In 2046, Haruyuki, a middle school student, sees his life changing after his meeting with Kuro Yuki Hime , the most beautiful girl in the school and the discovery of the virtual Accel World.

Thoughts: I’m picking this up since I haven’t had some sci-fi anime in the longest time. Plus, the synopsis is just plain awesome! Beautiful Girl + Secret + Loser Guy sounds like a combination of Nogizaka Haruka with Izumo except a notch higher. Just look at the animation for this anime! Also Yoshino Hiroyuki, the one wrote Guilty Crown, is the one writing the anime script based on the adaptation of Kawahara Reki’s popular light novels.

Medaka Box

    • Genres: Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Martial Arts, Romance, School, Shounen
    • Producer: Gainax
    • TV Station: TV Tokyo
    • Director & Writer: Saeki Shouji
    • Will start in April 4 2012
    • Number of episode: Unknown

Synopsis: Kurokami Medaka, the new Student Council President, decide to establish a box in the school (the Medaka Box) where students will submit problems that they have. With the help of her childhood friend Hitoyoshi Zenkichi and two other student council members, she promises to solve the problems submitted in the box, whatever they might be.

Thoughts: I’m only picking this up to get ideas for my stories…. but I have extremely low expectations for this. The manga is one of the lowest ranked in Shounen Jump, it’s a surprise to most that it’ll even become an anime. The producer GAINAX have made popular animes such as Gurren Lagann, but some are saying that GAINAX isn’t as good as it was before so better. Hope this will be a turn-around surprise.

Hiiro no Kakera

    • Genre: Action, Romance
    • Producer: Studio Deen
    • TV Station: Yoimuiri TV
    • Director:
    • Writer:
    • Will start in April 1, 2012
    • Number of episode: 26

Synopsis: An anime adaptation of the Hiiro no Kakera video game. “One day, Tamaki Kasuga decides to move to her grandmother’s house, away from her family, out in a remote village. However, the real reason why Tamaki is called to the village is to continue a mysterious ancestral duty and mission.  As her destiny starts to unfold, will she be able to stand strong against the forces before her…”

Thoughts: This is like Harukanaru Toki and Shinsengumi reduxed. You have your reverse harem set in the Edo Period. I want to see how it uncovers and will it be better than the two similar animes I mentioned.

Shining Hearts ~Shiawase no Pan~

    • English Title: Shining Hearts ~Bread of Happiness~
    • Genre: Action, Fantasy
    • Producer: Production I.G
    • TV Station: MGS
    • Director:
    • Writer:
    • Will start in April 13, 2012
    • Number of episode: Unknown
Synopsis: An anime based on the PSP-RPG. The island of Wyndaria is now full of pirate searching for a special spirit stone. Rick, a swordsman, and his friend join force in order to bring peace back to their island and protect Kaguya, a girl who lost her memories and who’s wearing the spirit stone around her neck.
Thoughts: Again, picking this up for story ideas. I like the amnesia parts but I have no idea which direction the story will be going.
Preview: None available. Hope the OP of the game suffices.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

    • English Title: Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
    • Genre: Mystery, Horror, Romance, School, Shounen, Supernatural
    • Producer: Silver Link
    • TV Station: Chiba TV
    • Director: Oonuma Shin
    • Writer:Takayama Katsuhiko
    • Will start in April 8 2012
    • Number of episode: 12

Synopsis: Niya Teiichi, a freshman, is able to see the ghost form of a women who was left to die in the former building of Seikyou Academy. With the help of Niya, this women tries to find out the reasons behind her death.

Thoughts: This is my most anticipated Spring anime. I originally casted this season as meh until this came out. I love ghosts-mystery stories. I hope this one will be just as good as Ghosts at School. It most likely will since Silver Link’s Oonuma Shin would be the one heading this. Also the manga is pretty good. Not a surprise, Takayama’s other adaptations were already good. Some notable works include Mirai Nikki, Ef, Natsu no Arashi.

    • Genre: Mystery
    • Producer: Kyoto Animation
    • TV Station: Chiba TV
    • Director: Takemoto Yasuhiro
    • Writer: Gato Shouji
    • Will start in April 22, 2012
    • Number of episode: 21

Synopsis: Oreki Hotaro is a high school boy who just joined the classic literature club. With his friends from the club he tries to solve a 33 years old mystery burried in a collection of works from the former member of the club.

Thoughts: I’m picking it up for the mystery aspect once more. Plus it’s Kyoto Animation who’s producing this! The guys who made K-ON, so you can expect beautiful and cute character designs.

Ginga e Kickoff!!

    • Genre: Sport
    • Producer: TYO Animations
    • TV Station: NHK-BS Premium
    • Director: Uda Konosuke
    • Writer: Yamada Takashi
    • Will start on April 3, 2012
    • Number of episode: Unknown

Synopsis: This is the story of a young boy who tries to reunite his disbanded soccer team after meeting a professional female soccer player.

Thoughts: I love sports animes! Even if people think this is a kiddy show, I’m sure it has more depth than what the eye can see. That’s what I’m hoping. I’m a bit disappointed at the pacing of Area no Kishi. I’m picking this anime so I can contrast the two. Although the reuniting angle is really attracting me.

Preview: None available

Kimi to Boku Second Season

    • Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School, Shounen, Slice of Life
    • Producer: J.C. Staff
    • TV Station: TV Tokyo
    • Director: Kanbe Mamoru
    • Writer: Yoshida Reiko
    • Premieres April 2012
    • Number of episode: 13
Synopsis: The story revolves around four teens — the good-looking twins Yuuta and Yuuki Asaba, the effeminate Shun Matsuoka, and the class head Kaname Tsukahara — who have known each other since early childhood. While they are not necessarily good or bad friends, they continue to hang out well into high school. The half-Japanese transfer student Chizuru Tachibana joins the circle of friends in this comedy about the everyday life of adolescence.
Thoughts: I didn’t really watch the first season, just selected episodes. I thought an anime with boys doing their stuff would be interesting but it ended up being quite dull. I will bother watching the second season just to see if this anime actually got better.
Preview: None available. The one below was for the first season.

So that wraps up my spring preview. I might give a better one for summer though, watch out for it late June if ever. Just when I thought Winter 2011/2012 had a good line-up, this came along. One more week until we say hello to all these new anime! Hahaha, are you as excited as I am? You can expect a pile first impressions to be trickling in soon. 😉
