Bridal Mask is the drama that I look forward to the most for the June line-up. Despite the tragic bus crash that killed one extra and sent dozens others to the hospital, the production was able to resume. I thought the premiere date was pushed back to June 13 due to the Equator Man extension, but apparently it’s right back on track going head to head against I Do, I Do and Ghost. I just know this one will be the one to come out on top.
Bridal Mask or Gaksital, is an upcoming KBS drama based on the 70’s manhwa by Heo Young-man. The drama is set in the 1930s amid the independence movement against Japanese colonial rule. It’s about a freedom fighter who wears a bridal mask to keep his identity hidden as he fights injustice.
The hero, Lee Kang-to an unassuming young man in real life, but when he dons his superhero mask, he fights injustice and rights wrongs during one of the darkest periods of Korea’s history.
This is a huge action-adventure blockbuster project with a budget of 10-billion won. At the helm is PD Yoon Sung-shik (Story of a Man) along with writer Yoo Hyun-mi (Green Rose). With all this said, it’s gaining a lot of interest and buzz. For more info, check out the official website.
Joo Won (Ojakgyo Brothers, 1 Night 2 Days). He obviously plays Lee Kang-to, the freedom-fighting hero. His character, a police officer, watches as his older brother is injured while participating in the independence movement. When his hyung is killed, he joins the fight himself and transforms into a nameless hero. By doing so, he has a dual identity; mild-mannered by day, badass by night.
Jin Se-yeon (My Daughter Flower,The Duo). She plays Mok-dan, the good and smiling heroine who’s apparently a member of a circus. The hero breaks off their relationship when he chooses to take up the identity of masked, unnamed freedom fighter, and thereafter Mok-dan becomes “a woman who would risk her life to protect him.”
Park Ki-woong (The Musical, Full House 2). He plays Shunji, a Japanese teacher who adores children. He’s a son of a samurai who has a soft and angelic personality with Korean sympathies and a gentle demeanor. However, it seems his heartache over the woman he loves Mok-dan (Jin Se Yeon) falling for his best friend Kang To (Joo Won) causes him to turn dark later.
Han Chae-ah (I Believe in Love, Hero). She plays Chae Hong-joo, a lethal spy posing as a seductive singer. She was adopted to Japan and comes to Korea to eliminate that pesky hero Bridal Mask, the masked crusader fighting against the Japanese. Beyond her espionage work, complications arise when she falls for him instead.
The cast of Bridal Mask, which includes Joo Won, Jin Sae Yeon, Park Ki Woong, Shin Hyun Joon, and the rest of the cast gathered at the KBS Annex on February 3rd for their first table read.
