Winter Anime 2013 Preview

It’s the that time of the season again! There’s not so much promising titles but I’m have high hopes for the sequels namely, Chihayafuru and Minami-Ke. Well I don’t feel as bad since the 25 episode animes from Fall are about to tread on their climax.

AKB0048 Next Stage

  • Genre: Music, Sci-Fi
  • Producer: Satelight
  • TV Station:  TV Kanagawa / Chiba TV
  • Director:
  • Writer:
  • Will start in January 6, 2013
  • Number of episode: TBA
Summary: Sequel to AKB0048. In the original series, an interplanetary ware broke out at the start of the 21st century. Earth’s ecosystem was damaged, and humanity was forced to flee the planet. In this new society, things that “disturb the heart” like music and art are forbidden. 28 years later, a legendary idol is resurrected as AKB0048. Labeled as terrorists, they must take up arms to defend their careers and their fans.
Thoughts: The first season had many flaws but the songs and relaxed storyline drew me in. I especially love the development they did with Takamina’s character. How I just wish they do the same for the rest of the characters. I’m just glad this anime decided to have a follow-up, there’s so much ground to still tread with this series.

Amnesia

  • Genre: Romance, Shoujo
  • Producer: Brains Base
  • TV Station:  NHK-E
  • Director: Ohashi Yoshimitsu
  • Writer: Machida Toukou
  • Will start in January 7, 2013
  • Number of episode: 12
Summary: The main character wakes up on August 1 with no memories of the past and discovers she has absolutely no memories of the past. A boy appears before her, and he introduces himself as a “spirit” named Orion. The protagonist struggles to regain her memories under the guidance of Orion. She then gets a phone call, but she does not recognize the name on her mobile phone screen. She meets her apparent “boyfriend,” despite not knowing his face
Thoughts: The premise is just love. It’s a different kind of twist from the usual amnesia stories. I think a 1-cour is just right for this kind of story. I’m quite curious how she’ll end up with Orion if ever. I’m hoping this will be more noir than romcom. Funny romance can only do so much. Plus the amnesia angle might get good angst that this anime may need.

Thoughts: This is not really a series but rather an OVA. This was originally suppose to air Summer 2012 but it got pushed back now. It has a similar premise to Sword Art Online but the feelings may be stronger since it’s about family. Family ties don’t break as easily.

The start playing as a group with Taichi Mashima, Chihaya’s smart and athletic childhood friend, until they have to part ways during their middle school years due to several circumstances. As their high school life begins, they meet once again.
Thoughts: This is the anime that made Winter seem promising in the first place. I can’t contain my excitement! OMG OMG OMG! Yes this the anime that made me love animes again. What I love most about it is the heart! Despite all the setbacks the kurata club has faced, each member has grown immensely. I felt like I have grown with them as well.

  • Will start in January 5, 2013

Summary: Sequel to the Da Capo series. Kiyotaka is a second-year student at Kazami Gakuen who is part of the news club along with the school idol Rikka, his imouto-like osanajimi Himeno, his mixed-race cousin Charles, hard-wrking kouhai who skipped a grad and is in his class Sara, and genertic in spirit but weak in body Aoi.One day, all the news club members get a message on their cell phones telling them to do something at a promised when the sakura begins to bloom. They couldn’t make out the rest of the message, but are surprised that it was dated 1951.  Rikka was extremely curious about the message and the sudden blooming of the sakura, so she called on everyone to solve the mystery with her.

Thoughts: I’m not particularly excited for this sequel. I feel lie I’m just following on the Da Capo fandom because I already started. Usually it’s the second season where Da Capo becomes interesting. Well, I hope I only have to sit through a cour like Da Capo II. This series has retained some concepts present in all. Aside from the obvious sakura blossom, there’s the standard character archetype present in all the series.

Minami-Ke Tadaima

  • Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
  • Producer: Feel
  • TV Station: Tokyo MX
  • Director: Kawaguchi Keiichiro
  • Writer: Kouno Takamitsu
  • Will start in January 5, 2013
  • Number of episode: TBA
Summary: Sequel to the Minami-Ke series.
Thoughts: I wasn’t expecting a fourth season but this is a pleasant surprise. I’m in need of a good comedy anime, and this will definitely do the trick. It has a new studio and director so I’m hoping they manage to retain the best parts of the Minami-Ke series. They’re quite mysterious for not revealing anything on the synopsis let alone a trailer. Well having an established title will surely get fans to watch.

Savanna Game

  • Genre: Fantasy
  • Producer:
  • TV Station:
  • Director:
  • Writer:
  • Will start in 2012
  • Number of episode: TBA
Summary: The story follows a young man named Kazuya Shibuya who receives an anonymous email message out of the blue one day: “Won’t you join the Savanna Game?” The message is an invitation to a state-sanctioned killing game- a deadly role-playing game designed to motivate the inhibited youth of modern Japan. Shibuya and his two friend Kotegawa and Kudou find themselves in bizarre battles that span the space-time continuum, with everything from dragons to Shinsenguumi force of the shogunate era.
Thoughts: The premise is very interesting. A deadly battle game. Count me in? It sounds like a combination of Sword Art Online, Mirai Nikki and Zetsuen no Tempest, but I’m hoping take into consideration the fault of the two animes. I love dark animes so that’s another plus point for this. This better deliver. I feel like it’s the type to reach my anime top 10.
