I love the leads but the writer just turns me off. I’ll be keeping tabs on this. If I hear good reviews, I might decide to watch this.
Fantasy sageuk Gu Family Book is a twist on the gumiho legend with the hero being a half-gumiho, half-human hero. The story is about the trouble Choi Kang Chi goes through in order to become human and the struggle in order to live more like a human than anyone else despite not being able to become human.
Directing is PD Shin Woo-chul, of Secret Garden and A Gentleman’s Dignity, and writing is Kang Eun-kyung of Baker King, Man of Honor, and Dalja’s Spring. Gu Family Book premieres on April 8 and follows Horse Healer on MBC.
Lee Seung-gi (King 2 Hearts) He plays the hero Choi Kang-chi, a half-gumiho who falls in love and wants to be human. He is an outspoken character who’s full of curiosity.
Suzy (Big). She plays Dam Yeo-wool, the daughter of Dam Pyung Joon. She’s a skilled fighter and particularly good with a bow and arrow. She never goes anywhere without her sword and prefers to pass for a boy. She is an upright character who really values the Three Bonds and Five Relationships in Confucianism, and becomes an instructor at a martial arts center at a young age.
Jo Sung Ha (IRIS 2). He plays an ex-soldier and martial arts teacher, Dam Pyung Joon. He is also the father of Yeo Wool.
Lee Sung-jae (Rascal Sons) He plays archvillain, Jo Kwon Woong who is a man born into poverty and eventually rises through the military ranks. He is now an ambitious man who tramples others to further his own goals.
Yoo Yeon-seok (Wolf Boy). He plays Park Tae Soo, Kang-chi’s rival. He’s the son of the man who takes Kang-chi in as an orphan when he gets left on the family’s doorstep. He’ll be the cold cynical scholar who challenges Kang-chi for the heroine’s affections.
Lee Yu Bi (Nice Guy). She plays Park Chung-jo, the daughter of the man who takes in Choi Kang-chi. She’s a traditional, well-behaved, learned young lady. She does have one bad habit though, she can be selfish knowing that Kang-chi likes her, and she uses that to her advantage when it’s convenient. But later she’ll come to her senses and become a rival to Suzy’s character for Kang-chi’s affections.
Sung Joon (Can We Get Married). He plays Gon Yi, Yeon Wool’s bodyguard who happens to be nursing a one-sided love for her. He also serves as Kang-chi’s steadfast assistant and has a bickering relationship with him.
Lee Yeon-hee(Ghost) She plays Yeon Seo Hwa, Kang-chi’s mother. Her character loses her father when he’s accused of treason and made a political scapegoat, after which she becomes a gisaeng. She escapes her father’s killer with the help of a man she then falls in love with.
Choi Jin-hyuk (Panda and Hedgehog) He plays a Gu Wol Ryung, guardian spirit of Mt. Jiri, and father of Kang-chi.
Jung Hye-young (Playful Kiss) She plays Chun Soo Ryun.
Otani Ryohei (The Chaser, Soulmate) He plays a “top ninja.”
