Tokyo Ghoul First Impressions

I love it when expectations are exceeded.

Expectations: Moderate

Verdict: Great

Summary: It begins as a dark ghoul predication. It shifts to Kaneki talks about dating Rize with his friend Hide. He ends up going out with her, after which her real identity was revealed. Hideki got attacked by the ghoul whom he manages to escape and kill. He was in critical state so the ghoul’s organs were transplanted into him. After recovering, he’s been living a secluded life trying to control his urge for people. He bumps into Nishiki and gets saved by Toka, an Anteiku.

Thoughts: This anime is very dark and serious in nature. The transformation from innocence into monstrousity is deftly handled. The struggle is real. I just wish we spent a bit more time developing his character before the emotional impact came in but nonetheless even without it, the premise was well established. I got chills not from the gruesome content but rather the existential question underlying this whole anime- “What does it mean to be human?” It pays tribute to the anime of late 1990s and early 2000s. While it didn’t blow me away, it was indeed a strong and reassured opening. Definitely summer’s potential gem.

Initial Rating: 9.5/10
